Adult Learn to Row classes
The Cape Coral Rowing Club's Adult Learn to Row Program (LTR) is held
4 - 5 times a year. Go to our What’s Happening button on the homepage to find the next scheduled LTR program.
The curriculum focuses primarily upon technique rather than athletic ability, so it is well-suited for those looking for an engaging sport with which to become more physically active.
Depending on the club's calendar and time of year, classes are held on Saturday and Sunday from 9am - 11am, or two weekday evenings from 6 pm to 8 pm.
Rowing is a "Team Sport", and takes teamwork. All participants will learn about teamwork, and that it takes a coxswain and 8 rowers working together to make a boat move through the water. Attendance is key when it comes to rowing.
What are the classes like?
Each session begins with an introduction and a "Safety on the Water" video by U.S.Rowing. Then students move on to learn about the parts of a rowing shell and how it works. During that first class, students are put into an eight-person shell, and use what they have learned to start rowing. There is no training or fitness level necessary for this class, but it does take physical ability and your fitness level will increase during the classes. Rowers who continue on and join the club will realize the cardiovascular and core strength development that rowing requires and also provides. Knowing how to swim is preferable, but ability to tread water for 10 minutes is mandatory.
What is the time commitment?
LTR sessions run for 3 consecutive weeks, two times a week. Each program consists of six two-hour lessons with one make-up class included for those that may miss a class. The six classes run 1-1/2 to 2 hours each. Attendance to all the classes is preferred, but not mandatory.
Registering for a Learn to Row?
CCRC Learn to Row tuition is $125 and you must register and pay for your session prior to the first class. This will guarantee your spot.
Signing up the first day of class is allowed, but the cost will be $150 and if the class is too full, you will have to wait for the next session.
Please read and be aware of our Refund Policy prior to making the commitment to our programs.
Are there any physical requirements?
There are no physical requirements for taking a Learn to Row class. CCRC has taught Learn to Row to adults of all ages and physical abilities. Contrary to what most people think, rowing is a sport that primarily uses the legs, not the upper body. However, it also develops excellent flexibility and "core" (abs and back) strength. In addition, rowing develops good cardiovascular ability at the more developed stages, but Learn to Row classes do not focus on fitness at first.
If you want to prepare for your Learn to Row class, the best thing you can do is walk or run to build cardiovascular fitness and stretch your warm muscles afterwards to build flexibility. Pay particular attention to the leg groups (quads & hamstrings) and your back and shoulders (lower back, obliques, delts, lats). You might also do a few sets of sit-ups to strengthen your abs and lower back. However, please remember that no training is necessary to take a Learn to Row class.
What happens after Learn to Row is over?
Students interested in continuing on should at this point join the club and receive Advanced LTR for free with their membership. The Skills and Drills Program is designed to allow new rowers the opportunity to apply their new rowing skills on the water and ease their transition from student to club member.
During this time, you will be gaining physical fitness and working on your rowing skills by technique-focused coaching. Club members will be around to assist you with questions, and at times will be rowing with you in your boat.
For many people, it takes time to feel comfortable in a boat. The long road to improvement is very challenging and very rewarding. You will see many health benefits brought on by actively rowing and that’s a good thing!
